Dr. Rachel Hunt retires from her commission as a US Army trauma surgeon after the death of her husband in combat and moves to her childhood hometown with her teenaged twins, Chloe and Matthew, to work as a family doctor. As Sarah settles into her new life, the entire community is saddened by the sudden death of Ross Alexander, a beloved local newspaper editor and a patient of Rachel's who she just found perfectly fit after a complete physical. Propelled by frustration and aided by an intuitive and analytical mind, Rachel starts to investigate what could possibly have happened. Her attempt to involve the authorities is met with resistance by local police detective Jack Quinn, who is not willing to consider it more than a death by natural causes. However, Avery Smith, the reporter on the story for Alexander’s paper also has suspicions and joins forces with Rachel to find answers. Hunt, Quinn, and Smith ultimately form an unlikely investigative team and by the time a murderer is apprehended, Rachel is left wondering if the quiet life she sought with her children is a goal that can ever be reached.
